THE UNWEANED PIG SUPPER
SECRETARY'S REPORT OCTOBER 2011
Last Year's Meal
This was the second meal provided by Bev and her team at the George, and everyone there thought it was the best for some time. The food was excellent and the pig was pronounced “the best ever”.

The After-Dinner Meeting
The Chairman gave his usual interesting talk, and congratulated the Landlady on providing such a grand meal and on the service, which was agreed to be almost perfect.

Roy explained that, due some oversight with the supplier, the usual pair of small suckling pigs was replaced by one large one. This was generally agreed to be not such a bad thing 'as the meat was very good, and there was not as much waste. It was therefore agreed that we would have one pig again next year "and see how it goes".

Three members sent apologies for their absence: Richard Drakeford due to illness, Woodly Thomas also due to illness and Steve Thompson due to double-booking. Two members didn't turn up for the second year running: Damien Dever and Colin Dowse, and they therefore lost their memberships under the relevant rule. Colin Dowse had created a club website, but this no longer seems to be available, leaving an opening for anyone with the necessary skills and interest to have a go.

The committee was re-elected, proposed by Tom Wall and seconded by several.

Peter Arden proposed that the supper should be held at the George again next year, and this was carried unanimously.

There was a collection for Margaret Firmstone, who has worked in the G&D kitchen for many years, and who had recently suffered a severe illness. We all wished her a speedy recovery.

The food was pronounced brilliant, but there were two small criticisms: there was no Shropshire Blue cheese and the coffee was served pre-milked. It was generally thought that the crackling was much better than last year; the new Crackling Monitor is evidently having a beneficial effect.

Again, the Chairman stressed that all members should telephone him as soon as possible before the due date, to let him know if they will be able to attend, and the meeting was reminded that all members should wear, a current model of club tie. The club still has a stock of these beautiful hand-crafted ties, which are available from Roy Evans at the very reasonable price of £10.00 each.

Toasts were drunk to: the Queen (God bless her), Evan Evans, Geoff Edge, Mike Wozencroft, Geoff Mountford, absent friends and the pigs.

Two members dropped out last year: Messrs Dever and Dowse, and three guests who attended the 2010 supper have asked to become members. They are shown on the above list: Peter Fischer, Jim Glancy and
Chris Shingler. Ideally, we need one more members to bring us to the traditional 25. We would be pleased to receive nominations for new members who are likely to attend regularly, and their names will be added to the short waiting list.

Some members brought guests last year. They seemed to enjoy themselves, fitted-in well and their presence helped us over a short-term lack of attendee members. It is possible that we will need guests again this year to make up the numbers. If you would like to bring 'a guest phone Roy Evans.

The treasurer's balance sheet is shown below.

SUPPER 2011

Fortunately, the same couple are running the George as last year, and they are pleased to accommodate us again this year. So the 2011 pig supper will be held at the George & Dragon, High Street, Much Wenlock. Gather at 7.30 pm for 8.00 pm kick-off on Friday 28th October.

The cost of the meal will remain at £25.00.

Our treasurer has asked that members pay their subscription in the bar before the meal, in cash rather than by cheque, as we are charged for depositing cheques.

Please ring Roy Evans Tel: 01952 727610, to tell him whether 'or not 'you will be coming. This is most important as we can then hopefully arrange for guests to fill empty places. Also, 'let him know if you prefer red or white wine. This information is required by 14th October.
Alastair Macpherson. Hon Secretary
